Andrographis paniculata, known simply as andrographis or the “king of bitters”, is a longstanding herb used for immune support. In particular, andrographis has been found to reduce the risk of infection and the severity and duration of the symptoms of a wide range of upper respiratory tract infections, including the common cold.

Studies on andrographis show that it may be effective for managing the common cold when taken within the first few days of symptoms arising. One double-blind, placebo-controlled trial found that an andrographis spray was able to effectively and safely reduce severity of sore throat, coughing and difficulty swallowing in adults with viral pharyngitis. The duration of these symptoms was also shortened in the treatment group. A separate double-blind, placebo-controlled trial found that 6 grams per day of andrographis was as effective as paracetamol for fever and throat pain in adults with pharyngotonsillitis. 

Although the delivery method, dosage and standardization of andrographis extracts used in research studies is highly variable, the minimum dried herb equivalent for effectiveness appears to be 6 grams per day. Moreover, most studies suggest that a minimum of 5% andrographolide content is needed for proper immune support. One proprietary extract of andrographis, known as ParActin®, standardizes to an unmatched 50% andrographolide content. Clinical studies on ParActin® found that it reduced the incidence of the common cold when taken over the course of a 3-month period and also that it lessened the severity of common cold symptoms when taken acutely for 5 days during active infection.  

In addition to immune support, a more recent clinical application for andrographis is in the area of musculoskeletal health. Specifically, bioactive compounds in andrographis may lower inflammation levels, ease osteoarthritis symptoms and modulate rheumatoid arthritis (RA) progression.

The aforementioned proprietary extract of andrographis, ParActin®, has well documented anti-inflammatory action through inhibition of NF-Kappa B and reductions in COX-2, IL-2 and IL-6. This likely explains why ParActin® has been shown to improve stiffness, pain and quality of life in osteoarthritis sufferers. Another clinical trial actually found that it improved the effectiveness of methotrexate for relieving the number and grade of swollen joints, lowering rheumatoid factor levels, reducing immunoglobulin A and lessening fatigue in individuals with rheumatoid arthritis. Animal studies suggest that ParActin may also be beneficial also for bone health, cartilage and muscles. Ultimately, ParActin® is well-equipped to support both the immune system and the musculoskeletal system through its anti-inflammatory actions.

Directions for Use:
