Designs for Health’s Calcium D-Glucarate features
150 mg of calcium from 1200 mg of calcium D-glucarate
per 2-capsule serving to support the maintenance of
good health. Calcium D-glucarate consists of elemental
calcium bound to D-glucaric acid, which is produced in
small amounts by the human body and is also found in
various plant foods, such as apples, oranges, grapefruit,
broccoli, cabbage, and kale. Some individuals may
benefit from higher amounts of calcium D-glucarate
through supplementation.
Calcium D-glucarate may help support the body’s ability to
properly eliminate toxins and hormones by supporting liver
detoxification capacity. A liver detoxification process called
glucuronidation readily eliminates foreign toxins, such as
environmental pollutants or pharmaceutical drugs, and
excess hormones produced in the body, such as estrogen
testosterone, cortisol, and more. During glucuronidation,
toxins and hormones become bound to glucuronic acid
and are able to be eliminated from the body.
Elimination of the bound glucuronic acid compounds
occur through the stool in the gastrointestinal tract.
Unfortunately, certain bacterial species located in the
large intestine secrete an enzyme called β glucuronidase
that is capable of de-coupling or unbounding these
compounds from glucuronic acid. This may impact the
body’s ability to eliminate the compounds. In the body,
calcium D-glucarate may potentially inhibit the activity of
this enzyme, thereby facilitating the removal of these
compounds. Reduction of this enzyme may also support
increased excretion of bile acids and glucuronidation of
cholesterol to promote healthy cholesterol metabolism
and excretion.
